What is a file extension:

File names on computers are typically written out as a filename with a suffix. The suffix is called the file extension.

Example: Resume.doc

This example refers to a file named Resume. The extension (.doc) tells the computer what format the file is in and which program is associated with the file. Doc files typically refer to Microsoft Word Documents.
